Alimentary, Dr. Watson

This doesn’t, strictly speaking, have anything to do with music. Or loosely speaking. Or at all. But it does have something to do with central Florida, so close enough.

I am hardly a foodie, though I very much enjoy good and interesting food. I am hardly snobbish though and will happily eat at Denny’s or IHOP or ::chorus of angels:: Steak and Shake. To me food is like movies: there’s good and bad ones, and enjoyable and unenjoyable ones and they don’t always line up. Road House is kind of an objectively terrible movie but I really enjoy it and will watch it when presented with the opportunity. I understand, but am not offended by, anyone who hates that movie, thinks it’s crap, and doesn’t want to watch it.

(My magnanimity ends at Steak and Shake though. The Frisco melt is a culinary delight and I will absolutely fight anyone who tries to argue otherwise).

Below is a non exhaustive list, in no particular order, of local restaurants that I enjoy, recommend, and can often be found haunting.

Zaza Cuban Diner - My favorite Cuban restaurant in Orlando. Palomilla and cuban toast all the way. There’s also one in Waterford and one in Altamonte now.

3500 Curry Ford Road

Orlando, FL 32806

The Greek Corner - I will, and frequently do, destroy a Gyro here.

1600 N Orange Ave

Orlando, FL 32804

The Rusty Spoon - Great farm to table downtown.

55 W Church St,

Orlando, FL 32801

Mynt - Indian Food at hannibal square. Their Kashmiri Naan is fantastic.

535 W New England Ave

Winter Park, FL 32789

Saffron - Indian food in Dr Phillips. The lamb korma is my favorite.

7724 West Sand Lake Rd.

Orlando, FL 32819

Sushi Lola’s - The Magic Roll: Shrimp? Good. Avocado? Good. Spicy mayo? Good. Fire? Good. (Thumbs up on their Bulgogi Bibimbap, too)

2902 Corrine Dr

Orlando, FL 32803

Houndstooth Sauce Company - My favorite beef brisket in town. Also a great Chicken Pesto sandwich.

East End Market

3201 Corrine Dr

Orlando, FL 32803

Fuji Sushi Winter Park - 2005 Roll (Spicy salmon), New Zealand (kiwi and salmon) are my staples. Very inexpensive for the amount of food too.

1449 Lee Road

Winter Park, FL 32789

Anthony’s Pizza - My go to when I want a New York Style pie. Their cannoli are great too.

1206 E Colonial Dr,

Orlando, FL 32803

Gitto’s Pizza - My go to for by the slice downtown.

120 S Orange Ave,

Orlando, FL 32801

El Bodegon - Spanish Tapas on 1792. (They’re exterior sign is a little run down, but they are open). Fantastic sangria and often a flamenco guitarist.

400 S Orlando Ave,

Winter Park, FL 32789

Santiagos - More tapas in Ivanhoe Village. Their (busy) brunch has crab legs, all you can eat. And bottomless sangria / mimosas.

802 Virginia Dr,

Orlando, FL 32803

Black Rooster Taqueria - I have a disdain for onions and peppers and I’m one of the lucky few that tastes soap when I eat cilantro, but even with all of that I love this place. Favorite guacamole in town.

1323 N Mills Ave

Orlando, FL 32803

King Cajun Crawfish - I made a mistake while ordering two weeks ago and ended up with about 2 lbs of Dungeness crab, corn, potatoes, and about 20 crawfish. Best mistake of my life.

924 N Mills Ave

Orlando, FL 32803

King Bao - Delicious, fast, and cheap vietnamese style steamed bun sandwiches.

710 N Mills Ave

Orlando, FL 32803

Smiling Bison Sanford - This is hands down my favorite restaurant. When I heard they were moving from Orlando to Sanford, I considered staging a sit in protest. My favorite burger (bison) that I’ve ever had.

107 Magnolia Ave,

Sanford, FL 32771

Benjamin French Bakery and Cafe - Go get a pastry from there. Right now.

716 East Washington St

Orlando, FL 32801

Bar Harbor Seafood - This is a bit tucked away near Sandlake Road in the business park, but the lobster rolls are great and they have a special on them on Mondays.

2000 Premier Row,

Orlando, FL 32809

Border Grill - My favorite Flautas, pretty much ever.

5695 Vineland Rd

Orlando FL 32819

Linda’s La Cantina - Orlando staple since 1947. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had at a good price and unpretentious atmosphere. Make a reservation; it gets busy.

4721 E Colonial Dr,

Orlando, FL 32803

Junior Colombian Burger - Their signature burger is a thing of beauty. A lot of different flavors on it (and potato chips) which works amazingly well. Neck and neck with Smiling Bison for favorite burger.

5389 S Kirkman Rd Ste 105.

Orlando, FL 32819

Super Rico Colombian Bistro - Tucked away near the downtown fire station, but well worth seeking out. Love the salchipapas.

57 West Central Blvd

Orlando FL 32801

Nile Ethiopian - Favorite family style restaurant in Orlando. Not sure how to describe the food, other than everyone I’ve taken there has said it was one of the best things they’ve ever eaten.

7048 International Dr,

Orlando, FL 32819

Bosphorus - Higher end Turkish restaurant. The special Beyti Kebap is my favorite. Also locations in Dr. Phillips and Lake Nona

108 S Park Ave,

Winter Park, FL 32789

An Hong - Lot’s of competition for vietnamese food in this part of Orlando, and you can’t really go wrong, but An Hong is my favorite.

1124 E. Colonial Dr

Orlando, FL 32803

The Strand - Cozy local place with a rotating menu and awesome food.

807 N Mills Ave,

Orlando, FL 32803

Also, I love Orlando’s food trucks. The two bazaars I go to the most are Tasty Tuesdays in the Milk District (every Tuesday) and the Fashion Square Mall Sunday Bazaar (2nd Sunday of the month)

Some of my favorite trucks:

Swede Dish

Philly’s Best Cheesesteaks

Monsta Lobsta

Tamale Co

Empanada Truck

Vegan Hotdog Cart

And, seriously, treat yourself to a Frisco Melt from Steak and Shake sometime.
