She Runs Like the Devil

I can’t recall the first time I rode in my Paw Paw’s (Southern for grandfather) 1969 Chevrolet Nova SS. However, I do remember the blazing hot black leather seats cooking my little chicken legs as my brother Chris and I scrambled into the back seat this one time.
The Nova was blue. Not just any blue though, azure turquoise embedded with metallic flakes that shined like tiny stars when the sunlight hit at just the right angle. The damned thing looked fast and completely pissed off parked in my grandparents driveway.
With a quick turn of the key, the engine roared to life and the outside world melted away. We raced around the steep, winding hills of Northern Alabama, laughing until our faces hurt, screaming with delight as Paw Paw floored it. My brother and I felt like Batman and Robin!
Paw Paw was a Mason and a blue collar family man employed by the DuPont Watson Works off Powdermill Road. I think they made dynamite or something. He was also a proud veteran of World War II, drank Pabst Blue Ribbon before it was hip, and spit Red-Man chewing tobacco into a red plastic Solo cup like it owed him money.

As his health declined, there was talk of which grandchild would get the Nova. I figured it would go to my cousin Bobby. He’s the oldest grandchild, and a great guy. No dice. In fact, it just sat there. My idle idol so to speak.
As the tale goes, my Paw Paw crashed his beautiful Nova on the day he got it. The car was too fast and too powerful even for him.
Overtime, the tires went flat, the rust quietly invaded, the belts cracked and the dashboard split from baking in too many soggy Alabama summers.
Then one day, the Nova just vanished.
I asked my cousin Jeremy and my Aunt Jayne about Paw Paw’s beloved chariot of fire and the fate of the once mighty muscle car of my dreams.
In the end, Paw Paw just couldn't bare to part with his epic ride. After many years of neglect, my grandmother secretly donated the Nova to a local high school. It became a restoration project for the auto shop class and no one in our family got the car.
Just think, the mighty Nova might be sitting in a garage somewhere in Alabama, waiting to go for another spin. Wait, what the hell? Am I bitter? Nah! Write a song about? Yup. - Tony
Lyrics
Spit fire and save the matches, Nova
Spit fire and save the matches, Nova
Up in the valley
Down on the hill
Drinking to forget her
But you know you never will
Nova, Nova, Nova
Driving hard
Driving fast
She Runs like the devil
Build for speed but not to last
Nova, Nova, Nova
Spit fire and save the matches, Nova
Spit fire and save the matches, Nova
Over to the city
Sleepy Sunday drive
She got them cruel intentions
and a loaded 45
Driving hard
Driving fast
She runs like the devil
Build for speed but not to last
Nova, Nova, Nova
